Nakba Project

Let us ALL remember the Nakba

This web page is intended to provide activists from around the world with the information and materials to prepare a public art event to commemorate the Nakba, the Palestinian tragedy of 1948. These pages have been prepared by the Zochrot [“Remembering”] organization which is based in Tel Aviv.

In this activity, participants create a large-scale map of the land of Israel/Palestine in a public space. The ‘map’ is actually a grid, made of adhesive tape or rope, that correlates to the actual longitude and latitude lines of the map of Israel/Palestine. During the activity, participants are given cards that represent each of the Palestinian localities destroyed during the Nakba. The participants return these cards to their correct location on the map according to the longitude and latitude number printed on the card. The participants can also personalize their cards or decorate the map using chalk, colored stones, stickers, ribbons… During the activity, people can use an open microphone to share their sentiments on returning a particular village to the map.

The activity ends when the map is complete.
