You are invited to join us for a tour of Abu Kabir, which was occupied with the fall of the city Yafa in 1948 and parts of which were annexed to what is now called “Tel Aviv”. Abu Kabir is known in our collective awareness and the colonial perception as a pathological institute or, at best, as a prison. During the tour, we will engage in a 'relearning' of the space and the area, as it is a diverse neighborhood where Palestinians maintain livelihoods through employment, agriculture, and community.
As part of the tour, we will also launch the new remembrance booklet created together by the Zochrot community partners led by Yara Shahine Gharablé.
Saknet Abu Kabir is one of Jaffa's neighborhoods that began to be built outside the city walls in the 1830s by the Egyptians who came with Ibrahim Pasha. Before the Nakba, Abu Kabir was a vibrant agricultural-industrial neighborhood.
We will learn about its formation, the space, and urban planning, and examine concepts such as “Sakneh”, “Well house” and “Orchards” – and how they became tools of colonial optical illusion. We will hear testimonies from refugees and survivors from the neighborhood, sharing stories about life before the Nakba and expulsion, and what “return” means for them.
The tour will be led by Yosef Asfor | Friday, October 24, from 11:00 to 13:00
Meeting point: Derekh Ben-Zvi 82, Tel Aviv-Yafo or via Waze: Derekh Ben-Zvi 82, Tel Aviv-Yafo.
*The tour is not circular but accessible by public transportation.
* Tour language: Hebrew
